What can web site statistics tell me?
Counting web site visitors. A count of the number of visitors to your web site can be a useful piece of information. If your count is low then this indicates that you need to promote your web site to raise its visibility to internet users. If your count is high, but the business generated is low, then perhaps you need to consider improving your web site content to make it more interesting or to suit the needs of your business better.
Referer Statistics. There are a number of ways that visitors can get to your web site. They can come through a link on another site, from a search engine listing or simply by typing your address in the browser address line. How people are finding your site can also be useful information. It can tell you which links and which search engines are working and which are not. You can then get rid of unsuccessful links (especially if they are paid advertisements) or improve your optimisation for a particular search engine.
Search engine keyword statistics. Statistics on the keywords and keyword combinations used to find your site can also be useful. They can tell you which key words are most often resulting in your site being found. If these are not what you would expect or seem mostly irrelevant (coupled with poor business generation) you can have your site re-optimised for better keywords.
Agent Statistics. The agent is usually the browser being used to visit your site. For example, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator or Opera. However, these statistics can also let you know if a search engine robot has analysed your site or even if less welcome agents, such as email address collectors, have visited. You can even ask TCS to block certain agents from accessing your site.
Blocking some sites may be useful. For example, if your hosting company charge for bandwidth, you don't want internet archiving robots, spy robots, email gathering robots, copyright investigation robots and other invasive robots downloading everything from your site at your expense.
